Verified case 2 of 2

Uber Technologies, Inc. (Docket No. 190-490)

Date
2019 (listed under Resolved Matters; multistate settlement announced September 2018)
Amount
$148 million to the states; Wyoming will receive a little over $570 thousand
Legal basis
Wyoming data breach notification law and Wyoming consumer protection law

Why the action was brought

Uber learned in November 2016 that hackers accessed personal information about drivers, including driver's license information for roughly 600,000 drivers nationwide and a small number in Wyoming. Although driver's license numbers triggered Wyoming's notification duty, Uber delayed reporting the breach until November 2017, and must now strengthen data security and governance.
